[WAPO] “A vast portion of the CIA’s computer hacking arsenal appeared to have been exposed Tuesday by the anti-secrecy organization WikiLeaks, which posted thousands of files revealing secret cyber-tools used by the agency to convert cell phones, televisions and other ordinary devices into implements of espionage.

 

The trove appeared to lay bare the design and capabilities of some of the U.S. intelligence community’s most closely guarded cyber weapons, a breach that is likely to cause immediate damage to the CIA’s efforts to gather intelligence overseas and place new strain on the U.S. government’s relationship with Silicon Valley giants including Apple and Google.

 

WikiLeaks, which claimed to have gotten the files from a current or former CIA contractor, touted the trove as comparable in scale and significance to the collection of National Security Agency documents exposed by former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden.

[ACLU] “WASHINGTON — The Trump administration, through a memo from Attorney General Jeff Sessions, withdrew an Obama administration policy to reduce and ultimately end the use of private prisons by the Justice Department.

 

David C. Fathi, director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s National Prison Project, issued the following statement:

 

“Handing control of prisons over to for-profit companies is a recipe for abuse and neglect. The memo from Attorney General Sessions ignores this fact. Additionally, this memo is a further sign that under President Trump and Attorney General Sessions, the United States may be headed for a new federal prison boom, fueled in part by criminal prosecutions of immigrants for entering the country.

They are remarkable for how completely they turn sensible immigration policies upside down and backward. For how they seek to make the deportation machinery more extreme and frightening (and expensive), to the detriment of deeply held American values.

 

A quick flashback: The Obama administration recognized that millions of unauthorized immigrants, especially those with citizen children and strong ties to their communities and this country, deserved a chance to stay and get right with the law. It tried to focus on deporting dangerous criminals, national-security threats and recent border crossers.

[WAPO] “President Trump’s speech over the weekend along Florida’s Space Coast — effectively a campaign rally staged just one month into his term — served, more than anything else, as an illustration of the extent of the political polarization now gripping the United States.

 

Trump had already declared open war on his country’s media, describing the mainstream press as the “enemy” of the American people. The 9,000-strong crowd of supporters seemed to agree.

“It was hilarious to see him give it to the media,” said Tony Lopez, 28, a car dealer from Orlando who spoke to my colleagues covering the event. “The media’s problem is that they keep wanting to make up stories so that he looks bad. It doesn’t work. He’s talking right through you guys.”

 

Since Trump entered the White House, he has lashed out at supposedly negative stories about his presidency as “fake news.” Many of his supporters, who largely subscribe to a steady diet of right-wing talk radio, television and websites, share this assessment.

 

“If he hadn’t gotten into office, 70,000 miners would have been put out of work,” said Patricia Nana, a 42-year-old naturalized citizen from Cameroon. She was referring to a bill Trump approved on Thursday that scrapped an Obama-era regulation preventing mines from dumping debris in nearby streams. “I saw the ceremony where he signed that bill, giving them their jobs back, and he had miners with their hard hats and everything — you could see how happy they were.”

 

Such was her view. Here was the reality: “The regulation actually would have cost relatively few mining jobs,” my colleagues explained, “and would have created nearly as many new jobs on the regulatory side, according to a government report — an example of the frequent distance between Trump’s rhetoric, which many of his supporters wholeheartedly believe, and verifiable facts.”

MEXICO’S President Enrique Pena Nieto Dumps On Trump! Mexican President Cancels Meeting With Donald Trump After Border Wall Order!

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto announced Thursday that he canceled a meeting with President Donald Trump that had been scheduled to take place on Jan. 31 in Washington. 

 

Peña Nieto had faced intense pressure from legislators to take a firmer stand against Trump by passing on the meeting, after Trump signed an executive order Wednesday moving forward on the construction of a wall along the Mexican border ― while continuing to insist that Mexico will somehow pay the multibillion-dollar cost.

 

In a series of tweets, Peña Nieto said he lamented the Trump administration’s decision to insist on Mexico paying for the proposed border wall, a condition the Mexican president has long said he would not accept.

 

“This morning, we have informed the White House that I will not attend the work meeting scheduled for next Tuesday with @POTUS,” Peña Nieto wrote.
