Don’t Forget: Hillary Clinton Is Blazing A Momentous Trail!

[WAPO – Eugene Robinson] “Not enough has been made of two obvious facts: Hillary Clinton, if she wins, will be the first woman elected to the White House. And it will have been the votes of women who put her there.

 

Think, for a moment, about what a remarkable milestone that would be. Consider what it would say about the long and difficult struggle to make the Constitution’s guarantees of freedom and equality encompass all Americans. The first 43 presidents were all members of a privileged minority group — white males. The 44th is a black man, and the 45th may well be a white woman. That is a very big deal.

 

The historic nature of Clinton’s candidacy has been all but lost amid the clamorous sound and fury of the Donald Trump eruption. The campaign has seen many unforgettable moments, but one that I believe will prove truly indelible came during the third and final debate, when Clinton was speaking and Trump interrupted her by snarling, “Such a nasty woman.”

 

Within minutes, “nasty woman” became an Internet meme — not so much because of what it said about Trump, since we already knew of his sexism and misogyny, but because of what it said about the moment. A “nasty woman” was on the verge of shattering the highest and most shatterproof glass ceiling of them all. That this accomplishment would come at Trump’s expense just made it a bit sweeter.

 

Polls show Clinton leading Trump among women by double-digit margins — an incredible 17 percentage points in a recent Fox News poll. If only men could vote, Trump would have a lead, albeit a shrinking one. But thanks to the 19th Amendment, Clinton is well ahead nationally and has taken solid leads in almost all the swing states.

 

 

Surely this has something to do with the “Access Hollywood” videotape in which Trump brags of groping and kissing women against their will — and the 11 women who have come forward to accuse him of doing just that. But I like to believe it also has much to do with Clinton and the virtues she has demonstrated during the campaign.”

 

 

We made History in 2008 Electing the First African American President that turned out to be “beyond” fantastic!

 

Let us make History again by Electing the First Woman President that is beyond “qualified” “experienced” and “intellectually temperamental” fit to serve on “Day One.”

 

 

This two Historic Moments would never happen in the Republican Party, at least for the foreseeable future. Let us hope for the good of America the GOP for once in the past 30 years do what is right for America.

[WAPO] “GETTYSBURG, Pa. — Donald Trump traveled Saturday to the site of the most bloody battle of the Civil War, where he suggested that the United States is nearly as divided now as it was then. But instead of laying out his vision for uniting the country, as President Abraham Lincoln once did in this historic place, Trump declared that the system is rigged against him, that election results cannot be trusted, that Hillary Clinton should have been barred from running for president, that the media is “corrupt” and that he will sue all of the women who have accused him of sexual assault.

 

“It is my privilege to be here in Gettysburg, hallowed ground where so many lives were given in service to freedom — amazing place,” Trump said, soon after taking the stage more than an hour later than expected in a ballroom at the Eisenhower Hotel and Conference Center. “President Lincoln served in a time of division like we’ve never seen before. It is my hope that we can look at his example to heal the divisions we are living through right now. We are a very divided nation.”

 

Trump told the crowd of about 500 locals who are active in the Republican Party that he didn’t have to run for president, but he did so because the country is in trouble, and he can fix things because he’s an outsider who knows how the “very broken system” works. He described himself as being able to deliver “the kind of change that only arrives once in a lifetime.”

The Trump and Clinton campaigns have traded barbs and accusations about each other’s charitable foundations. The two foundations differ widely in size, purpose and the reach of their charitable work.

 

 

What Do the Foundations Do?

 

THE CLINTON FOUNDATION

 

The Clinton Foundation sponsors programs in public health, economic development, women’s rights and climate change. Much of its work has been praised, including efforts to lower the price of AIDS medication and distribute it to children.

 

But the foundation hasn’t always succeeded. In Haiti, its signature project after the 2010 earthquake — the Caracol Industrial Park — has provided only a fraction of the jobs promised, and those are low paying.

 

How Large Are the Foundations, and Who Funds Them?

 

THE CLINTON FOUNDATION

 

The Clinton Foundation is a giant among world charities, raising an estimated $2 billion through 2016 and employing around 2,000 people. According to Bill Clinton, the foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative have helped more than 435 million people in 180 countries.

 

The Clinton Foundation is largely funded by third parties (including foreign governments), other major foundations and billionaire admirers of the foundation’s work.

THE TRUMP FOUNDATION

 

Mr. Trump’s foundation is modest in size, with no paid staff and a board that is composed of Mr. Trump, his three oldest children and the Trump Organization’s chief financial officer. The Trumps estimate that they each spend half an hour a week on foundation work. Mr. Trump has donated $5.4 million to his foundation over the years, according to tax filings.

 

Until the 2007 housing market crash, the foundation was primarily funded with Mr. Trump’s money. Since then the foundation has been funded mostly by other people’s donations, which is unusual for a family foundation.

 

How Have the Foundations Been Criticized?

The Trump campaign has accused the Clinton Foundation of being a conduit for wealthy business people seeking to influence the Clintons, particularly when Mrs. Clinton was secretary of state.

 

The Clintons maintain that no special favors were done for foundation donors, and that no special access was given to the State Department.

 

But it’s easy to see how the appearance of a conflict of interest could arise, with foreign governments and business people making large donations to the foundation.

 

During Mrs. Clinton’s tenure as secretary of state, Douglas J. Band, an adviser to Bill Clinton and then head of the foundation’s Clinton Global Initiative, emailed her staff to ask for a diplomatic introduction for Gilbert Chagoury, a Lebanese-Nigerian industrialist and one of the foundation’s major donors, saying that he’s a “key guy there and to us.”

 

THE TRUMP FOUNDATION

 

Recent reporting on the Trump Foundation, primarily from The Washington Post, has centered on Mr. Trump’s repeated use of foundation money to make donations that simultaneously helped him solve a personal or business problem.

 

Here’s an example: After Mr. Trump put up a flagpole at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Fla., that was higher than the town allowed, the town council began fining him for every day it remained in place. Mr. Trump sued.

 

The case was eventually settled with Mr. Trump agreeing to donate $100,000 to charity, according to The Washington Post. But the donation came from the Trump Foundation instead of Mr. Trump himself. Using charity money to satisfy a personal lawsuit is typically considered to be self-dealing, an illegal use of nonprofit foundation funds.

 

The New York Times reported in September that Mr. Trump’s foundation does not show up on the charity registers in many states, highlighting how the foundation at times has not complied with non-profit regulations.

Trying to stay on top of Trump’s outrages is exhausting. The 2005 tape of him linking his fame to consequence-free sexual assault overshadowed his racist comments about the guilt of the Central Park 5. At the debate, he threatened to jail Hillary Clinton, so we had to talk about his fascistic tendencies — before returning to his abhorrent behavior toward women. Now that he released an ad mocking he’s Clinton for her alleged physical ailments, it’s time to talk about his ableism.

 

Ableism, the individual or systematic discrimination against and stigmatization of people with disabilities or people perceived to have disabilities, is still an unfamiliar concept to many Americans — some of whom aren’t even willing to admit that racism or sexism are real. Ableists convey the message that disabled people are not full members of our society, leading to exclusion and even abuse. Trump is fully complicit in sending precisely that message.

 

Trump is using invented illnesses to try and portray Clinton as not fit to lead.

 

Here are just a few examples. Trump has fixated on Clinton’s health for months now, but it’s gotten worse. At a recent rally, he pretended to wobble and then faint in front of a laughing crowd. He routinely questions her stamina (a thinly veiled code for health) and he and his surrogates promote conspiracy theories that Clinton has conditions including strokes, Parkinson’s and epilepsy. While it’s not necessarily ableist to want to know about a candidate’s health, Trump is using invented illnesses to try and portray Clinton as not fit to lead.

 

Fat-shaming is another kind of ableism, and Trump especially likes to mock women he deems overweight, such as Alicia Machado (the former Miss Universe) and Rosie O’Donnell. He has also made fun of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s weight. 

 

Bizarrely, Trump’s supporters have lately been using the candidate’s routine ableism as a defense against accusations that he mocked a disabled New York Times reporter last November. Supporters are arguing that Trump wasn’t specifically insulting the reporter, but that he routinely uses spastic arm motions — what Ann Coulter calls “standard retard” — to make fun of people.”

Trump while bolstering down-ballot candidates in what party leaders increasingly suggest could be a sweeping victory for Democrats at every level.

 

Signaling extraordinary confidence in Mrs. Clinton’s electoral position and a new determination to deliver a punishing message to Mr. Trump and Republicans about his racially tinged campaign, her aides said Monday that she would aggressively compete in Arizona, a state with a growing Hispanic population that has been ground zero for the country’s heated debate over immigration.

 

Mrs. Clinton is “dramatically expanding” her efforts in Arizona, her campaign manager, Robby Mook, told reporters on Monday. She is pouring more than $2 million into advertising and dispatching perhaps her most potent surrogate, Michelle Obama, for a rally in Phoenix on Thursday.

 

In Indiana and Missouri, Mr. Mook said, the campaign will spend a total of $1 million to drive voter turnout, despite what he acknowledged was an “uphill battle” for Mrs. Clinton in two states that could determine control of the Senate. There is a well-qualified, well-prepared candidate on the ballot. Hillary Clinton has the potential to be an excellent president of the United States and we endorse her without hesitation. [Washington Post Unequivocal Endorsement]

In a moment, we will explain our confidence. But first, allow us to anticipate a likely question: No, we are not making this endorsement simply because Ms. Clinton’s chief opponent is dreadful.

 

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is dreadful, that is true — uniquely unqualified as a presidential candidate. If we believed that Ms. Clinton were the lesser of two evils, we might well urge you to vote for her anyway — that is how strongly we feel about Mr. Trump. But we would also tell you that was our judgment.

 

Fortunately, it is not.

 

We recognize that many Americans distrust and dislike Ms. Clinton. The negative feelings reflect in part the bitter partisanship of the nation’s politics today; in part the dishonest attacks she has been subjected to for decades; and in part her genuine flaws, missteps and weaknesses.

We are not blind to those. Ms. Clinton is inclined to circle the wagons and withhold information, from the closed meetings of her health-care panel in 1993 to the Whitewater affair, from the ostensibly personal emails she destroyed on her own say-so after leaving the State Department to her reluctance to disclose her pneumonia last month. Further, she and her husband, former president Bill Clinton, are not the first to cash in on the speech circuit, but they have done so on an unprecedented and unseemly scale. And no one will accuse Ms. Clinton of an excess of charisma: She has neither the eloquence of President Obama nor the folksy charm of former president George W. Bush or, for that matter, her husband.

 

But maybe, at this moment in history, that last weakness is also a strength. If Ms. Clinton is elected, she will attempt to govern an angrily divided nation, working with legislators who in many cases are determined to thwart her, while her defeated opponent quite possibly will pretend her victory is fraudulent.

Even After Trump Loses The GOP Is Still Toast

[WAPO – Bruce Bartlett] “Last year, I wrote an article calling Donald Trump a godsend for moderate Republicans. Trump, I predicted, would lose so spectacularly that the GOP would be forced to transform itself, surrendering its mindless obstructionism, science denial, xenophobia and plutocracy. After a purge like that, the party would finally be able to compete in future national elections.

 

 

I was wrong. I now see that Trump’s candidacy has exacerbated the Republican Party’s weaknesses, alienating minorities, fracturing the base and stunting smart policy development. The party’s structural problems are so severe that reform is impossible. Even if Trump loses and the GOP races to forget him, the party is doomed. And very few of our leaders seem to care.

 

In the short run, it will be easy for Republicans to convince themselves that nothing needs to change. The establishment believes that Trump is an anomaly, an aberration. GOP leaders think the party’s next nominee will be a more typical politician who knows the issues, has well-developed debating skills and who will appeal to the elite and the Trumpkins. Someone like John Kasich or Marco Rubio.

 

Many leaders also assume that Hillary Clinton is an automatic one-termer. They think she’s incompetent, scandal-ridden and hell-bent on destroying the economy. They know, too, that neither party has held the White House for more than three terms in the post-World War II era.”

 

Polls are only indicators, we must go out and vote in order for Hillary Clinton to be victorious and continue President Obama’s Legacy, Policies and build on Obama’s Achievements, making America even greater than what it already is.
